Today's Big Stories

1. Funeral for fallen firefighter Timothy Klein held in Queens

Hundreds of firefighters and first responders were among those paying tribute and saying goodbye Friday to Timothy Klein, who died Sunday while battling a house fire in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Mourners packed a church in Queens, where Klein’s mother, Dee Dee Klein, said her son’s “ultimate dream job was to be a fireman.”

2. NY's congressional, state primaries to be held Aug. 23, judge rules

A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled Friday that New York's congressional and state Senate primaries will be held Aug. 23, after the state's top court rejected congressional district maps drawn by Democrats as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.

The ruling came just hours after Democrats were granted more time to submit new congressional and state Senate maps for consideration by a special master.

3. Study finds more than quarter of city adults infected during winter omicron wave

A quarter of New York City adults — 1.8 million people — got COVID-19 during the latter half of the winter omicron surge, according to a study from CUNY’s School of Public Health, showing further evidence that the surge may have rivaled or even exceeded the cases during the coronavirus’ first wave.

4. Astor Place Starbucks workers vote in favor of union

Workers at a Starbucks in the East Village have voted to unionize, making the outpost the chain’s second New York City store to organize, the union said Friday.

Eleven workers at a Starbucks on Astor Place, at the corner of Lafayette Street, voted in favor of unionizing, winning out against two “no” votes, Starbucks Workers United said in a press release.

5.  Hochul touts $31.5B for schools in New York state

New York schools are set to receive more than $31 billion in state aid as part of a record-setting $220 billion state budget.

But the money touted by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday -- made possible by increasing taxes on upper income earners as well as a cascade of federal aid -- may be harder to come by in the near future as economic storm clouds have gathered.
