Police officers shot an armed man in the shoulder at a Bronx subway station early Wednesday morning, the NYPD said.

It happened just after midnight at the 225 Street station near White Plains Road in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.

After the plainclothes officers with the 47th Precinct responded to a ShotSpotter activation and 911 call of a man firing a gun at the subway station, officials said, the officers confronted a 27-year-old man with a firearm on the southbound 2 and 5 train station.

Officers fired several rounds at the suspect, the NYPD said, striking him once in the left shoulder.

Police did not confirm if the man, whom they did not identify as of this writing, shot at the officers before they fired at him. The NYPD said a .380-caliber firearm was recovered at the scene:

The man was taken to a local hospital and was expected to survive. Investigators said two officers were taken a local hospital with Tinnitus.

Police did not confirm if any commuters were at the platform at the time of the shooting.

The suspect has an extensive criminal history, according to police.

This was the second police-involved shooting in the city in about five hours; police shot an armed man in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.

2 train service was temporarily suspended between Gun Hill Road and Wakefield-241 Street around 12:30 a.m. due to the police investigation and was back up and running shortly before 4 a.m.
