BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A four-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition Monday after an early morning fire in Brooklyn.

The flames broke out on the top floor of a three-story house located at 2300 Pitkin Avenue in East New York just before 1:30 a.m.

A man and two women were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

"I was asleep when I heard like a banging on the door, then it was like a whole bunch of noise, people screaming," said one witness. "And then when I came out, I could see the people upstairs screaming out the window, and everyone's out there screaming, 'help, help me.'"

Two firefighters were injured but are expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
