An NYPD officer who was attacked and robbed while he was jogging in the Bronx last month has been released from the hospital after more than two weeks of recovery.

Muhammad Chowdhury, 48, left NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi with his family Thursday morning, to cheers from a crowd gathered outside the Morris Park medical center.

The officer, who was off duty at the time of the attack, suffered a fractured skull and brain bleed during the Aug. 23 beating. He smiled and gave a thumbs up as a fellow officer wheeled him out of the hospital to a nearby car on Thursday.

His commanding officer, Deputy Inspector William Gallagher, of Manhattan’s Central Park Precinct, told reporters it was “a really great day for us.”

“I’m so thrilled to be here, and we’re really thrilled that Muhammad was able to walk out of the hospital safely, and much better than when he first came in,” Gallagher said. “Muhammad is an 18-year veteran of the New York Police Department, and honestly, if I could pick somebody to respond to a 911 call involving my family, he’d be one of the people that I would choose.”

“He is dependable, wonderful, and really embodies what we call New York’s finest,” he added. “So I’m happy that we are walking out here, and thank you to everybody inside the police department and outside the police department for the overwhelming amount of support that you all have given us.”

Chowdhury was jogging near Olmstead and Turnbull avenues in the Unionport section of the Bronx when a trio approached him, struck him in the head several times and stole his phone, keys and wallet, the NYPD said.

Police arrested one of the three suspects, 18-year-old Oshwan Logan, days after the attack. A second suspect — a 16-year-old boy — was arrested Thursday morning, the NYPD said.

As of Thursday afternoon, the third suspect was still at large, according to police.

The attack may have been one of a spate of robberies that have taken place in the Bronx and Queens within the past month, the NYPD said.
