Eight new staircases will be added at Flushing-Main St Station in Queens to alleviate overcrowding, the MTA announced Tuesday. Construction will begin at the end of June.

Four new street to mezzanine stairs will be installed, as well as four new mezzanine to platform stairs, transit officials said. The estimated cost of the project — which includes the expense of relocating existing utilities — is $61 million, and it is expected to be mostly completed by the end of October 2023.

“Flushing-Main-St Station is one of the top ten busiest stations in our entire subway system, and it is time its infrastructure supported that reality,” MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in a news release. “Soon our passengers will be able to travel through this station more easily and comfortably.”

“These eight new staircases will alleviate overcrowding on the platform and street level and ensure passengers can better move through the station,” MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer added.

Construction will be done at the station during off-peak hours, according to the MTA. In addition to the eight new staircases, four existing street stairs will be rehabilitated for ADA compliance and four existing platform stairs will be reoriented. The mezzanine, fare control areas, camera system and signage will also be upgraded.
