A man is in critical condition after being shot by NYPD officers early Sunday morning in the Bronx, according to police.

Officers shot the man at around midnight after chasing him and another suspect, who were driving a stolen vehicle, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said at a press conference just after 4 a.m. on Sunday.

Chell said that the two men exited the vehicle just a few blocks from Yankee Stadium — one suspect was quickly apprehended by police and the other shot at officers as he fled.

The man hid in the marsh area next to the Major Deegan Expressway, but a police helicopter spotted him about 10 minutes later, Chell said. The suspect was then shot by police in a second exchange of gunfire.

After the man was shot, police recovered him, removed him from the marsh and performed "life-saving" aid on the side of the highway before the suspect was taken to the hospital, Chell said.

According to Chell, the man, who is 39-years-old, is "known to the department." No officers were injured in the exchange.
