NEW YORK — The man who police say shoved 40-year-old Michelle Go in front of an oncoming train at Times Square in January was deemed unfit to stand trial by doctors from Bellevue Hospital, his defense attorney H. Mitchell Schuman said Wednesday.

Simon Martial, 61, had been charged with second-degree murder and ordered held without bail on Jan. 19.

"I expect that after the court deems Mr. Simon to be unfit, he will be placed in a secure hospital where his serious and long standing mental illness can be treated," Schuman said in a statement.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office requested two weeks to review the findings, Martial's attorney H. Mitchell Schuman said.

Go, who lived on the Upper West Side, was on her way to work at the consulting firm Deloitte when she encountered Martial on the subway platform, authorities said. Her death came amid increased hate crimes and violence targeting Asian New Yorkers. Hundreds gathered in Times Square for a candlelight vigil honoring her the week after she died.

Martial was homeless and had previous interactions with police, including three "emotionally disturbed encounters," authorities said when he was arrested on Jan. 15.

Martial's next court appearance is slated for April 19.
