Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Wednesday against New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleging her litigation against him is an abuse of power in pursuit of political clout and an intimidation tactic.

The attorney general filed a lawsuit of her own in September alleging years of financial fraud by Trump and his children in their roles at the Trump Organization.

James filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court after three years of a civil investigation into the former president and his businesses. Trump's three oldest children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric Trump, were also named defendants in the suit, alongside two company executives, Allen Weisselberg and Jeffrey McConney.

"This investigation revealed that Donald Trump engaged in years of illegal conduct to inflate his net worth, to deceive banks and the people of the great state of New York," James said at the time. "Claiming you have money that you do not have does not amount to the art of the deal. It's the art of the steal."

The state's lawsuit against Trump seeks $250 million in penalties and a ban against him and his children from conducting business in New York for five years. James also said she would make criminal referrals to the Internal Revenue Service and federal prosecutors.

In a post on on Trump's conservative website "Truth Social," he said New York is plagued by violent crime and that investigating him is a partisan act against him, his family, and his businesses.

The attorney general's office did not return request for comment.
