Officials with Eric Adams’ administration have been deployed to Texas to see firsthand exactly the conditions and state of asylum seekers arriving at the southern border.

Fabien Levy, Adams’ press secretary, confirmed the trip to NY1 but didn’t provide any other details.

Levy said the trip was motivated in part by the unresponsiveness of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who last month directed that asylum seekers get bused to New York City in an effort to highlight the border crisis.

“We’ve sent members of the team down on a fact finding mission to hear directly from folks on the ground along the southern border and get the real answers we’re not getting from Texas, including whether they are sending asylum seekers to New York City even if they prefer to go elsewhere,” said Levy on Friday.

There has been some questions surrounding whether migrants arriving at the border are being forced onto buses headed for New York or being given the option to come to the Big Apple.

In a statement provided to NY1, Abbott's press secretary, Renae Eze, said: "Governor Abbott’s invitation is still open for Mayor Adams to come visit our southern border and see firsthand the devastating impacts of the Biden-made crisis on border towns smaller than a NYC borough — instead of sending his staffers on a secret trip to Texas.”

Meanwhile, the influx of asylum seekers has put an added strain on the city’s shelter system.

Levy added that the city will continue to welcome asylum seekers while officials attempt to learn more about the busing operation.

“Here in New York, we will continue to welcome asylum seekers with open arms, as we learn more about the process, meet with real partners, and see, firsthand, the reportedly inhumane conditions in which asylum seekers are being subjected to by the state of Texas,” he said.
