Resident physicians and fellows working at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens have reached a tentative contract agreement, averting a planned five-day strike.

The nearly 300 unionized physicians reached the tentative deal with their employer, MediSys Health Network, at midnight Sunday night into Monday, the Committee of Interns and Residents union, which is part of the Service Employees International Unionsaid in a press release.

The new contract includes 18% salary increases over the next three years and additional pay for resident physicians and fellows who work extra shifts, a spokesperson for the union said.

It also includes hazard pay and enforcement of training requirements, according to the spokesperson.

“This agreement is one that will ensure that our class and future generations of resident doctors at MediSys are protected in the event of a public health emergency, while prioritizing both the community’s health care needs and our training,” Dr. Neha Ravi, a first-year resident at Jamaica Hospital, said in a statement.

The union had been in negotiation talks with MediSys since October.
