The 90-year-old owner of Ray’s Candy Store in the East Village was attacked early Tuesday morning, he said Thursday.

Police said a man carrying a package approached a 90-year-old man outside the decades-old store on Avenue A around 3 a.m. Tuesday and asked him if he wanted to buy it.

The suspect then asked another man to hold the package, told the 90-year-old he would kill him and struck him in the head and face with a belt that appeared to have a rock attached to it, the NYPD said.

  • The attack happened outside the candy store around 3 a.m., police said

  • The suspect fled south on Avenue A after the attack, and no one had been arrested as of Thursday morning, the NYPD said

The suspect fled south on Avenue A after the attack, which left the 90-year-old with a bloodied face, police said. No one had been arrested in connection with the assault as of Thursday morning, according to police.

In a phone call with NY1 on Thursday, Alvarez confirmed he was the man who had been attacked, and said he was not feeling well.

“I’m kind of black and blue,” said the store owner, who regularly works 20-hour shifts behind the counter. “I’m not really in a mood for anything. I just want to lay down."

Local blog EV Grieve first reported the assault on Thursday, publishing pictures of the bruises on Alvarez’s face.

Alvarez has owned the candy store since 1974. Last year, facing what he described as severe financial issues, he said he was considering shutting the store down.

But when local community members found out, they rallied together and crowdsourced tens of thousands of dollars to save the business.
