A Rikers Island inmate died Sunday afternoon, the Department of Correction said, marking the 19th city jails-related death this year.

Edgardo Mejias, 39, was pronounced dead at approximately 5 p.m. in custody at the Anna M. Kross Center, the DOC said in a statement.

His cause of death is under investigation by the city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, officials said.

Last year, 16 inmates died in DOC custody.

Mejias was arrested on Oct. 2 on a first-degree robbery charge, DOC records show.

“Mr. Mejias’ passing fills our hearts with sadness, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to all who held him dear as we recognize how hard it is to lose a loved one during the holidays,” DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina said in a statement. “As with all deaths in custody, we will work with our sister agencies to ensure that this matter is thoroughly and completely investigated.”

As is in the case of all deaths of people in city custody, the state Attorney General and the city’s Department of Investigation will launch inquiries into Mejias’ death.
