The NYPD is investigating a deadly shooting in Brooklyn involving police officers.

Police say around 10:15 p.m. Thursday night two women approached officers near West 36th Street and Mermaid Ave. and told them a person up the block was firing a gun.

At the same time, at least two 911 calls came through for shots fired in the area. That's when police units responded to the corner of 36th Street and Neptune Ave, according to authorities.

As officers approached the location, they witnessed a man with a gun who immediately started firing upon police, authorities say.

Police say they then returned fire and struck the man, who continued firing his weapon while on the ground injured. Once the man stopped firing, police closed in, handcuffed the man and began rendering first aid.

Police say the man died from his injuries.

Authorities recovered a gun at the scene of the incident.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, according to police.
