Mayor Eric Adams is expected to announce Thursday that athletes not vaccinated against COVID-19 will be allowed to play professional sports in New York City sporting venues, rolling back a layer of former Mayor Bill de Blasio's private-sector vaccine mandate, sources familiar with the matter confirmed Wednesday evening.

The major policy change would enable athletes like Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving, who has been barred from playing home games at Barclays Center, to rejoin their teams in full.

Specifically, sources say the mayor is expected to amend the city’s guidelines, which currently include a loophole that permits out-of-town performers and athletes to work at local venues without disclosing their COVID-19 vaccination status.

Sources say that same provision will now apply to local performers and athletes as well.

Adams is set to make the announcement at the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at Citi Field, two weeks ahead of Major League Baseball’s Opening Day, according to sources.
