NEW YORK -- Police watched over Susan Wagner High School during dismissal on Tuesday.

The day before, a gun was pulled during a fight outside the Staten Island school around 3 p.m. A group of men assaulted two Susan Wagner High School students near Brielle Avenue, according to police. The victims suffered bruising and swelling after being pistol whipped, the NYPD said.

One student was taken to Staten Island University Hospital -- North Campus for treatment and EMS treated another at the scene.

Students were asked to shelter in the school for safety.

"I was scared. I almost cried," said Madison Dimaio, a senior.

Parents received a robocall on Monday stating there had been an incident at the school. A day later, teachers received an email from Principal David Cugini stating, "I apologize for the delay in getting a message out to all of you," and that a non-school-related individual had a weapon that was used to strike one of the victims.

"I don't like it because they're notifying us after the situation has happened. Call us as it's going on," said Amany Hack, who has three daughters in the school.

Hack feels the school is unsafe after a string of violent incidents. In October, a knife was pulled during a fight in the school.

"My husband and I are contemplating taking them out of Wagner," Hack said. "School system needs to up their game. I see they have more cops, which makes me happy, but this should have been from the beginning."

A spokesperson for the city's Department of Education (DOE) sent out statement saying, "Ensuring our students can safely travel to and from school is the top priority of both the DOE and NYPD, and this deeply disturbing incident involving two individuals from outside the school community is unacceptable. We are working closely with the NYPD to identify the perpetrators and we are providing the victims with support."

The police presence outside the school was reassuring for Matthew Molfeetto, a freshman.

"Honestly, I feel safe. There's more people here to protect us," said Molfeetto.

And yet, Susan Wagner High School sheltered in placed once again Tuesday at approximately 3 p.m. after students reported hearing loud gun shots, police said.

A firearm was recovered Tuesday, but police could not confirm if anyone fired the weapon. Authorities could not confirm if the incident was related to Monday's incident.

Three people, however, were taken into custody for questioning in regards to the gunfire students claimed they heard Tuesday, as well as the Monday incident.

No charges were filed as of Tuesday night.
