NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio called the violent protests and looting in Capitol Hill on Wednesday “sedition” and “treason” and said: “That’s what the path to facism looks like.”

Violent protesters stormed the Capitol Building in an attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election on Wednesday. The mob was incited by President Trump, who spent the last few weeks falsely attacking the integrity of the election.

“Why on earth did they not set up a defense perimeter around the Capitol and screen anyone approaching?” he asked of Capitol Hill security officials at his daily press conference on Thursday.

The mayor was briefed on NYPD security plans in the city after the D.C. riots, he said.

“We would be ready for that if anyone attempted it,” the mayor said.

While the mayor said he doesn’t anticipate any protests of that nature right now, he said: “Had something like that been brewing in New York City, there would've been a defense perimeter put up. I absolutely guarantee that and that would’ve never been allowed to happen.”

He also demanded information on the leaders in charge of law enforcement for D.C. that allowed the security breach to happen.

“It’s mysterious, if you want to be generous,” he said. “I think it could be something worse… My fear is they did it on purpose.”

He urged people to focus on the decisions of leadership of the responsible security agencies instead of the individual officers’ actions on the ground.
