NEW YORK — Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom missed the strike zone for a third straight National League Cy Young Award.

Degrom finished a distant third in the balloting results announced Wednesday evening to Cincinnati Reds’ ace Trevor Bauer, who took 27 first-place votes for 201 points. DeGrom had 89 points and no first-place votes. Yu Darvish of the Chicago Cubs was the runner-up with 123 points, including three first-place votes.

DeGrom was looking to join historic company: only Randy Johnson (1999-2002) and Greg Maddux (1992-1995) have won three straight Cy Youngs. DeGrom was just one of 11 pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball history to win the award in back-to-back seasons.

Although not as dominant as he was in his previous two campaigns, the 32-year-old right-hander, in this 60-game season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, maintained his status as one of the sport’s elite pitchers.

In 68 innings pitched, he posted a 2.38 ERA, a 178 park-adjusted ERA+ and a league-leading 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings as his average fastball velocity soared to around 98 MPH.

DeGrom looked like he may have been the frontrunner for the award until the end of his season. He allowed six runs combined in two of his last three starts and went just seven innings.

Over the past three seasons, the best run of deGrom’s career, he had an ERA of 2.10 with a 2.31 fielding independent pitching (FIP), and a 0.943 WHIP. Despite his powerful numbers, a lack of run support led to a win-loss record of just 25-19 during that time.

Bauer had the best season of his career, leading the National League in ERA (1.73), park-adjusted ERA+ (276), WHIP (0.795), and complete game shutouts (two) in 73 innings pitched.

Although Bauer took the hardware away from deGrom, the two may end up being teammates in the 2021 season: the Mets are considered among the favorites to land Bauer in free agency.

Cleveland Indians’ ace Shane Bieber won the American League Cy Young Award, taking all 30 first-place votes over the Minnesota Twins’ Kenta Maeda and the Toronto Blue Jays’ Hyun-jin Ryu

Bieber was the most dominant pitcher in Major League Baseball this season, sporting a league-low 1.63 ERA and a 281 park-adjusted ERA+ with a remarkable 122 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched.
