A planned military flyover in New York City on September 11 has been canceled.
The act was to serve as a tribute on the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, but outrage quickly poured in from New Yorkers and city officials calling the event tone-deaf and insensitive.
A spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio said the mayor “wasn't aware of the flyover, and frankly, it's inappropriate.”
NYC Emergency Management originally tweeted that an F-18 jet would be conducting a flyover on the Hudson River towards the Verrazzano Bridge at 3:30 p.m. The aircraft would have flown at approximately 2,500 feet.
