NEW YORK - Police in the Bronx on Thursday announced an arrest has been made in connection with an 18-year-old man who was stabbed and set on fire inside an apartment building.

The NYPD says Adones Betances, 22, of the Bronx is charged with murder and manslaughter.

As Betances left the 44th Precinct Thursday afternoon to be taken to his arraignment, he told the media he was framed.

Investigators say the attack happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday inside an apartment building located at 1045 Woodycrest Avenue in Highbridge.

When police arrived, they found 18-year-old Winston Ortiz on the fifth floor of the building unconscious with multiple stab wounds and burns.

Investigators say Betances poured an accelerant on him, lit a match, then ran away.

Ortiz died at the hospital.

The victim's family members shared some photos of him with NY1 on Thursday.

Wilmer Ortiz, Winston's 17-year-old younger brother, says while Winston did not like having his picture taken, he did love his family. It’s a tight-knit unit that is now devastated by his death.

After being reminded that his brother would never return home, Wilmer Ortiz paused for a moment to compose himself.

“I don’t even want to think about it like that,” he said. “I don’t want to mourn his death. I want to celebrate his life.”

Wilmer Ortiz says his older brother was very distraught after breaking up with his girlfriend on Wednesday, and he believes his brother was somehow lured to the fifth floor of an apartment building on Woodycrest Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, thinking that he would be meeting up with her. Instead, police believe he was met by Betances.

“We want justice! We want justice for Winston!” said Nancy Tamarez, Winston's aunt.

“Everyone who is involved in that because they plan it, they got to be in jail,” she added.

Ortiz leaves behind two grieving parents, and two younger brothers, including Wilmer and their youngest sibling who is just 11.

“I wish I could tell him that I love him and that I care about him all the time,” said Wilmer Ortiz, when NY1 asked if he could tell his brother one last thing.

At this time, the NYPD has not yet identified a motive for Ortiz’s murder.
