NEW YORK - The daily number of coronavirus deaths in New York state and the number of new cases reached their lowest one-day tolls since the crisis began.

In his daily coronavirus update, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said 73 people died Monday as a result of COVID-19 in New York state. That's the third time in the past four days the state has reported fewer than 100 deaths.

Cuomo said the Mid-Hudson Valley is reopening Tuesday, and Long Island will begin to reopen Wednesday on Phase 1 levels as long as it does not see an increase in the metrics.

Cuomo says a possible mid-June reopening for New York City is the main focus now, announcing a data-driven plan to target the hardest-hit zip codes.

“Those zip codes tend to be predominantly minority communities. The infection rate is not spreading among essential workers, it’s spreading among workers who have stayed home or are unemployed, so it’s spreading in the home, it’s spreading in the community. We’re going to focus on those zip codes, we’re going to focus on those communities, and we’re going to slow the infestation rate in those communities and that will really bring the numbers down," Cuomo said.

The governor also said he will meet with President Donald Trump on Wednesday to seek more federal aid for the state. The governor says it’s the perfect time to ramp up infrastructure projects to restart the economy, including the LaGuardia Air Train, and extensions to Penn Station and the Second Avenue subway.
