Whether you’ve lived in New York City your whole entire life or only just moved here a month ago, every New Yorker knows the singular feeling of walking into their corner sandwich shop. From the off-brand candy to the wall of potato chips and the battle-tested looking feline lurking somewhere in the shadows, we each have our own go-to shop. In their own strange and wonderful way, they unite us as New Yorkers. But, as we learned on Wednesday morning during Morning’s on 1, what we call them is as divisive as the “R” or “D” before your local representative’s name.

Needless to say, this innocent tweet from our Jamie Stelter has the internet talking in all caps at one another.

So, in an effort to be as transparent as possible, let’s take a moment to examine where NY1’s savvy reporters stand on this pressing issue, and also give some props to the most illuminating responses we’ve received from our loyal readers and viewers.

Our Business Anchor, Annika Pergament, chimed in early with a hot take and, honestly, she’s not wrong.

Next up to the plastic plate: Education Reporter Jillian Jorgensen. Class is now in session, for Staten Island at least.

New York’s favorite morning anchor, Pat Kiernan, pushing for the nuanced take, as per usual.

THE CONSESUS?

For now at least, New Yorkers seem to agree on one thing and one thing alone: if it’s got a pet cat, it’s a bodega. If not, it just might be a deli.

And if by chance you're standing in your favorite, somewhat undefinable sandwich shop right this moment, take our "Are You Standing in a New York City Deli or Bodega" quiz to find out.
