WHY IS SERVICE BEING INTERRUPTED?

The closures were announced in October to prepare for the planned 15-month shutdown of the line in April for repairs to an East River tunnel damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Then, to much shock and delight Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced earlier this month that a full closure would no longer be necessary.

But the nighttime and weekend disruptions will still take place to prepare for trains to run on one track instead of two under the new scaled-down plan for tunnel repairs.

Some straphangers say these temporary closures will be bearable, while others are worried they may not stay temporary.

"I would be much happier with a shutdown on weekends and in the evenings for a period of time than I would having the entire train shut down for a year-and-a-half solid," one commuter said.

"I think we're used to getting jerked around a lot, so I'm not too surprised, but I also don't trust that it's not going to be shut down," another said.

MTA officials say the work starting Monday night involves installing new rails in the tunnel along critical sections of the line and preparing key switches and signals.

It's not clear yet what the exact rehabilitation schedule will be come April. But we do know that, while there will not be persistent closures, service will be scaled back on weeknights and weekends.
