NEW YORK - The city's public housing authority and its biggest union, Teamsters Local 237, have agreed on a new contract  that will allow the staff to clean on the weekends.

For the first time, NYCHA will be able to assign workers to weekend cleaning with a new four day work week.

Currently, caretakers work Monday to Friday.

The agency will be able to assign employees 10-hour shifts in exchange for four-day work weeks.

The agreement includes a two percent pay hike starting in May followed by a 2.5 percent increase in August 2019 and a subsequent 3 percent raise in 2020.

The contract also includes a $1,500 bonus for workers who opt into the new schedules.

The union says the agreement also gives preferential treatment to NYCHA residents to be hired for Caretaker positions.
