For thousands of New Yorkers who contracted the coronavirus and survived, recovering can be another uphill battle.

Lingering symptoms and complications can last for weeks and sometimes months, and the recovery isn't the same for everyone -- physically, mentally or emotionally.

The World Health Organization says that the average recovery time for individuals with mild cases is up to two weeks, while those with more severe cases can take up to six weeks for symptoms to resolve.

For Eric Yaverbaum of New Rochelle, falling ill to COVID-19 meant 90 days on oxygen and 29 straight days in bed, though he was otherwise healthy. He had first gone to the emergency room on February 14 for what he thought was a heart attack.

Yaverbaum is the president of Ericho Communications.

“I wake up grateful. I’m seriously happy to get another day,” he told NY1.

There have been 411,736 confirmed cases of coronavirus across New York State, including 25,106 related deaths, according to the state.

Yaverbaum was a guest on NY1’s One New York Monday morning.
