The New York City Council’s Committee on Immigration held an oversight hearing Friday to dive into how the Adams administration is handling the rising migrant crisis in the city.

Over the last few months, many have questioned if Adams has followed right-to-shelter requirements. There are over 14,000 migrants seeking shelter within the five boroughs, according to the city.

Councilwoman Shahana Hanif, chair of the Council’s Committee on Immigration, joined Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Friday to talk about the tents at Orchard Beach in the Bronx.

“My concern is that the mayor, this administration is circumventing, going around the right-to-shelter law that we have in place by just giving off the responsibility to the New York City Emergency Management team,” she said. “They’re getting away by saying, ‘Well, we don’t have to follow right-to-shelter because this is not under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeless Services.’ And that is inhumane.”
