Today's Big Stories

1. Health officials fret COVID-19 and flu could complicate winter

Public health officials and experts are closely watching flu and COVID-19 cases this season as the cold-weather months set in.

At the same time, they're encouraging eligible New Yorkers to ge their flu shots and COVID-19 boosters to limit the chances of both illnesses overwhelming brittle hospital systems that have bended during the pandemic.

2. City celebrates 78th annual Columbus Day Parade

The nation's largest celebration of Italian American culture returned to Fifth Avenue Monday morning when the 78th annual Columbus Day Parade kicked off.

Bands, floats and more than 100 marching groups made their way up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 72nd Street.

3. New York AG warns public safety at risk with suspended concealed carry law

New York state Attorney General Letitia James urged a federal judge Monday to keep the state's concealed carry law in full effect, warning that it would be a danger to the public to suspend the enforcement of its provisions.

The legal motion came as a federal judge last week suspended multiple provisions of the law approved this summer in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that overturned a century-old concealed carry measure.

4. Arrest made in connection with fatal stabbing on MTA bus in Bronx

Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a fatal stabbing aboard an MTA bus in the Bronx Sunday night.

Ebony Jackson, 42, was charged with murder and manslaughter in connection with the incident, according to the NYPD. Police added that they are still looking for another suspect in connection with the case.

5. Running club asks NYC Marathon to ban Russian athletes

The New York City Marathon will not bar Russian and Belarusian runners from participating in the race, despite a Ukrainian running club’s petition calling on organizers to impose a ban.

The Ukrainian Running Club of New York last month launched a petition seeking the ban, maintaining New York Road Runners, which organizes the marathon, would be “implicitly normalizing” the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the killing of Ukrainian civilians by failing to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes.

6. Russia blasts Kyiv, other Ukrainian cities in deadly strikes

Russia retaliated Monday for what it claimed was a Ukrainian terrorist attack on a critical bridge by unleashing its biggest and most widespread attacks against Ukraine in months.

The lethal barrage against multiple cities smashed civilian targets, knocking out power and water, shattering buildings and killing at least 11 people.
