BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Firefighters in Brooklyn rescued a 3-year-old and several others from a two-alarm apartment fire early Thursday morning.

Video from the scene showed the dramatic rescue in which a firefighter carried the child down a ladder from a third floor window.

Authorities said the toddler was one of four civilians transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.

FDNY officials said 11 people in total were injured in the blaze, which broke out at a NYCHA-owned apartment building on Manhattan Avenue in Williamsburg around 1:45 a.m.

The child was initially listed as critical due to age, but is expected to survive. Officials said one other person was seriously injured.

Two firefighters were also transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

One resident said she believes the incident began with a faulty space heater in her apartment.

“I got up and went to the kitchen and I just couldn’t believe that my apartment – my space heater, that’s what they call it – was on fire,” she said.

She noted that the flames were low and she immediately called 911.

“As soon as the fire went up more, and I tried to get water – I just ran out, I grabbed my child and I just ran out,” she said.

Residents at the building told NY1 that the space heaters are necessary because of frequent heating issues. However, NYCHA denied that in a statement Thursday afternoon.

“Since October 2021, there have been no heat or hot water service outages in the building and no heat work orders in the apartment where the fire started,” officials said “There was also a working smoke/carbon monoxide detector in the apartment when it was last inspected on January 22, 2022.”

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
