GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Getting started on a New Year's resolution, like working out more, can be daunting when temperatures are below 30 degrees.
Runners like Chris Tuft say the best time to start is now.
"You just have to tell yourself it's going to be cold and that you're going to be cold when you're running, at least when you start, then get over it," he says.
It can be fun but doctors say if you are starting a new exercise program to start slow and cover all exposed skin like your hands and ears.
"Usually the early signs of getting to cold is shivering. Sign of hypothermia is actually when you stop shivering," Dr. Michael Rigby at Moses Cone Health says.
Hypothermia is when your core body temperature drops quickly at a rate that can be deadly.
"if you're at the point of uncomfortably shaking, that's when you need to take action," Dr. Rigby says.
He also says when it's cold out, it tricks your brain into believing you don't need to hydrate. He says people actually lose more moisture while breathing during the winter months than summer months.
Dr. Rigby adds on top of staying hydrated, make sure to stay dry.
"Clothing gets wet, even from sweat. That's something that your temperature is going to drop very rapidly that way," he says.
When you have all of that down, you're ready to hit the pavement.
