A new program, in Sunnyside, is encouraging residents to gather in public spaces and enjoy some time outdoors.

Giant board games are just some of the featured activities that are part of the "Spring into the Plazas" program.

The program includes free, family-friendly activities held in the two public plazas under the 7 train bridge.

"We really want to make these places known as destinations in the neighborhood," said organizer Rachel Thieme.

The initiative was organized by the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District.

Residents can also enjoy performances by local theatre groups, pop up libraries and more.

"It creates community. People are up and down into the 7 train at least twice a day and then when they come off the train, they see life," said City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Queens).

The "Spring into the Plazas" program will run every Friday until June.
