Reverend Al Sharpton's organization National Action Network held a rally with Tyre Nichols’ family in Harlem Saturday to call for police reform on the federal level.

The family was also joined by Ben Crump, civil rights attorney, to call for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Back in January, Nichols was beaten to death by cops in Memphis, Tennessee.

Five officers have been charged in connection to his death.

At the time of his death, officers claimed erratic driving led to the stop.

“I’m still trying to process this. And it hasn’t been easy. I still have my good days and my bad days,” RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother, said. “What keeps me going are the prayers that I’ve received from all of you beautiful people.”

The police reform bill was introduced in 2021 by House Democrats to combat police misconduct, excessive force and racial bias in policing.

The bill stalled over debates regarding qualified immunity, a legal immunity for officers.

All five officers involved in Nichols’ arrest were charged in connection with his death, and the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation.

The family is seeking a conviction for all officers involved.

Crump said it shouldn’t make a difference if the misconduct is by a Black or white police officer.

They want to see the same justice no matter what the race the officer is, and the George Floyd Policing Act would be a blueprint for all officers.

At the beginning of March, a seventh officer from the Memphis Police Department was terminated.

Another senior officer retired this week before his disciplinary hearing.
