It's one of those fun, inventive boating design features: an electric grill on the boat for meals out at sea.

It's one of the features on the Formula 430 Super Sport Crossover, one of the of the biggest boats on display at the Discover Boating New York Boat Show at the Javits Center in Manhattan.

There are hundreds of boats there, and they come in all sizes, with a variety of price points.

What You Need To Know

  • The Discover Boating New York Boat Show is being held at the Javits Center in Manhattan through Sunday

  • It is the world's first and longest-running boat show

  • There are hundreds of boats and personal watercraft of all sizes, ranging in price from thousands of dollars to more than $1 million

  • Boating boomed during the pandemic as families sought to get outdoors

"You can finance a boat for few hundred dollars a month, the way that you would a car, or you can get a personal watercraft, which is what many people know as a jet ski, for around five to 10 thousand dollars, something like that," show spokesperson Carrie Waible said.

Other boats cost more than $1 million, according to Waible.

If someone isn't quite ready for that kind of investment, it's still fun to check out all of the vessels — and even relax and dream of being out on the water. There was a real boating boom during the pandemic as folks sought to get outdoors with their families.

"2020 and 2021 saw more than 800,000 first-time boat buyers come aboard, and we are seeing demand continue, especially as supply chain returns and people can get their hands on new boats," Waible said.

The show allows prospective boat buyers a chance to check out a whole bunch of different boats, and shop and compare them side-by-side.

"I like to kick the tires, not just read online and see the videos — those are great — but I also love to see what the wheel feels like, let's say," said Ian Wilson, the membership and operations director at SailTime New Jersey, which sells boats, as well as boat-sharing opportunities.

The Discover Boating New York Boat Show runs through Sunday, Jan. 29. Tickets are $20, and kids ages 12 and under get in for free.
