NEW YORK — Frequent bus and subway riders who use the OMNY tap-and-go system in the city could soon be getting free rides.

Sources say the MTA is considering a plan called "fare capping."

Under the proposal, OMNY users who take a dozen trips between Monday and Sunday would not have to pay for the rest of their rides that week.

This is similar to the MTA's 7-Day unlimited MetroCard, which costs $33.

If the plan is approved by transit officials Wednesday, a pilot program would kick off on March 1 and last for at least four months.

An MTA spokesman says "Fare Capping" is meant to encourage ridership and reduce costs and uncertainty for customers.

Subway ridership is currently at about 58% of pre-pandemic levels.

OMNY is expected to full replace the MetroCard in 2023.
