NEW YORK - Following the success of the 14th Street busway, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer is looking to expand the program uptown.

Brewer has sent a letter to Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg requesting the Department of Transportation look into making 125th and West 181st Street busways as well.

Just like 14th Street, cars and trucks would be allowed on the streets for pickups and drop offs only, and would have to make the first possible right turn.

Data showed ridership did increase on 14th Street buses after the busway was created.

In a statement, a DOT spokesperson says the agency is always looking for ways to reduce the reliance on cars in the city. But, transforming any major street is not a decision the City takes lightly.

They say the DOT plans to make decisions on additional busways sometime next year.
