Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD are telling New Yorkers to start putting Apple AirTags in their vehicles to track them in case they get stolen.

The mayor visited the 43rd Precinct in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx Sunday to talk about a continued increase in the number of vehicles being stolen.

The Association for a Better New York donated 500 Apple AirTags to the NYPD to help them combat car robberies.

“This simple device, this simple AirTag, hidden in a car, a location that a person is not aware of, is an excellent tracking device. It’s easy to monitor,” Adams said.

According to Adams, the NYPD will put out a video explaining how to use the device.

He said that there have been over 200 grand larceny auto crimes in that Bronx precinct alone.

According to Adams, Hyundais and Kias are specifically being targeted because of a TikTok trend that made thieves aware of a security flaw in the vehicle. So far, 966 Hyundais and Kias have been reported stolen this year, officials said at the press conference.

This is not the first time small devices have been suggested for use by the NYPD.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told NY1 in February that they are suggesting that shop owners being robbed try to slip an AirTag in a bag of stolen goods handed over to thieves.
