A U-Haul driver police say went on a deadly “rampage” in Brooklyn on Monday will be arraigned on murder and attempted murder charges, officials said Tuesday.

Weng Sor, 62, faces charges including one count of second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a news briefing.

The Las Vegas, Nevada, resident is accused of hitting three cyclists, three moped drivers, an e-bike rider and a pedestrian as he drove a rented U-Haul through southern Brooklyn Monday morning, Essig said.

One of the moped drivers, a 44-year-old man whose name has not yet been released, died of his injuries on Monday, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

“So far we’ve developed, through numerous 911 calls, witness statements, video footage and more, a timeline that spans more than an hour,” the commissioner said. “The chronology begins at Sunset Park, and follows the suspect’s path of destruction through Bay Ridge, into Dyker Heights, back into Bay Ridge, and eventually ending just outside the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.”

While Sor lives with his mother in Las Vegas, he has ties to New York City, as his estranged wife and son live in Brooklyn, Essig said.

“We believe Mr. Sor was suffering from a mental health crisis,” the chief of detectives said, citing interviews with Sor’s family members. “At this time, there is no nexus to terrorism.”

Police said Sor traveled to West Palm Beach in Florida on Feb. 1, where he rented the U-Haul truck he allegedly used in Monday’s attack.

On Feb. 4, officers in South Carolina stopped him for reckless driving and marijuana possession, Essig said. By Feb. 6, however, he had traveled to Brooklyn, showing up at his ex-wife and son’s home to shower, according to Essig.

Two days later, on Feb. 8, Sor got into an “altercation” with his son when he returned to their home to shower again, Essig said. That same day, highway patrols hit Sor with two summonses for speeding and driving a commercial vehicle on the Belt Parkway, the chief of detectives said.

Essig noted Sor's estranged family lived nearby where they say he attacked people Monday.

Sor’s alleged “rampage” began around 10:20 a.m. on Monday, when he struck a 34-year-old cyclist at 55th Street and Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge, Sewell said.

Within the next hour, Sor hit a 33-year-old cyclist at Senator Street and Fifth Avenue; a 30-year-old cyclist at Bay Ridge Parkway and Seventh Avenue; a 51-year-old moped driver at Bay Ridge Parkway and 12th Avenue; a 32-year-old moped driver at 72nd Street and Third Avenue; a 66-year-old pedestrian at 73rd Street and Third Avenue; a 38-year-old e-bike rider and the 44-year-old moped driver who later died, she said.

An NYPD officer from the 68th Precinct was also injured when Sor struck his patrol car near Wakeman Place and Ridge Boulevard, the commissioner said.

Sor managed to evade police until they boxed his truck in near the entrance to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel in Red Hook, the NYPD said.

As of Tuesday, one of Sor’s victims was in critical but stable condition, Essig said. His six other civilian victims sustained injuries ranging from “broken bones to cuts and bruises,” while the police officer sustained an injury to his leg, Essig said.

Sor has a criminal record that includes eight prior arrests dating back to 2002, including a 2002 DWI arrest, a 2015 domestic battery arrest and two arrests for battery with a deadly weapon, in May of 2017 and November of 2020, respectively, the chief of detectives said.

All of those arrests happened in Las Vegas, Essig noted. Attorney information for Sor wasn’t immediately available Tuesday.
