The uptick in gun violence continues to ravage many city neighborhoods. Mayor Eric Adams has outlined several ways to stop crime. His latest tactic includes meeting with rappers and drill music artists to discuss a solution.

He says he believes drill music, a subgenre of rap, is contributing to shooting deaths and gang activity with teens and young adults.

In recent weeks, two drill artist were killed in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn rapper Maino chimed in on the conversation to discuss his recent sit down with the mayor and local drill artists.

“For me, it was important to put together the meeting because, you know, if you’re going to talk about the violence in drill music then you have to actually have to have drill music artists in the discussion,” explained Maino.

The rapper said he had to breakdown what drill music is, calling it a sound, not an action. He said apps are making it easier for drill artists to have back and forth hostile disagreements. He said that most of the teens involved in drill music have been in gangs and involved in violence before the music.

“The music is the manifestation of the direct lifestyle off of what they come from. The music does not influence the life, it is the life that influence the music.”

He went on to say the solution to the problem has to be real. The music is one thing, but the problem is deeper, he said.

He said due to the social economic problems in the cities, crime, gang bangers and drug dealers are always going to be an issue.

“Thirty years ago, it was gangster rap, now it is drill rap. It’s the same problem until we have set out some real initiatives and some plans to actually address prevention.”
