A 70-year-old woman is dead following a hit and run in Brooklyn.

Police say Maria Lorente was in the area from Florida visiting her son, who lives near the intersection of Flatlands Avenue and 78th Street in Canarsie.

According to police, Lorente was crossing the street when she was hit by the car, dragged on the hood and then ran over.

Police say the driver fled the scene.

The 70 year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Residents say despite a speed camera near the corner, speeding is still an issue.

"It's not unusal from time to time to see people coming down, coming through the block at a high rate of speed. It can be very annoying, and it really causes you to wonder what's going on. Why would you, in a residential area, want to be going at such a rate?" one resident said.

Police have made no arrests, but say the victim was hit by a dark-colored sedan beleived to be a black Nissan Maxima.
