Police say a 13-year-old boy from the Bronx is dead following a gang-related shooting Sunday afternoon in broad daylight.

Detectives say Jaryan Elliot of Belmont was shot multiple times in the chest and leg on East 187th Street by Prospect Ave. just a short walk from the Bronx Zoo.

In a Tweet, the NYPD’s Chief of Department, Rodney Harrison, said the shooting took place around 3:15 p.m. and was gang related.

Harrison said Elliot was the intended target and that he was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

The shooting rattled many people who live nearby, including Amalia Torres, who heard four gun shot from her apartment.

“How did it sound?” NY1 asked Torres. “Bang, bang, bang bang!” she replied. “I feel sorry for the victim. It’s sad. It’s real sad.”

Angelo Duran lives on the block where the shooting took place.

“Since it’s summertime,” Duran began, “it doesn’t surprise me, to tell you the truth. This part of Bronx, during this time of the year, when it’s hot, tempers flare and people are going through certain things. I don’t know, but I feel horrible that a young man loses his life for whatever.”

The deadly shooting involving a teenage victim comes just days after Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency on account of gun violence.

The NYPD said, last month, the department made 361 gun arrests, which represents a 99.4 % increase compared with the same period a year ago.
