Every month, the MTA releases its performance measures. Recently, it was data to back up assertions that subway, bus and train service generally is improving. But riders have mixed opinions on that and other aspects of the system.

“I used to live in New Orleans,” Bronx resident Jeffrey Watson said. “This is way better.”

But others say there is room for improvement.

What You Need To Know

  • Twice a year, riders can take their opinions straight to the MTA by taking the Customers Count Survey

  • The MTA says it makes changes based on customer input

  • New York City Transit President Richard Davey says between 2022 and 2023, riders said they felt safer on trains and in stations

“The subways would be much nicer if they were cleaner, if there [were] more cleaner crews that were visible,” Manhattan resident Andrea Katz said. "If there were some public service announcements to [not] litter, which I don’t see.”

Twice a year, riders can take their opinions straight to the MTA by taking the Customers Count Survey. And the agency says the feedback does lead to change.

“In the past, the survey has adjusted schedules, launched new fare product, especially for the commuter railroads,” Shanifah Eieara, the MTA’s acting chief customer officer, said. “And we’ve created a brand new commuter alert system.”

The service with the highest customer satisfaction in the spring survey: express buses. The area that saw a decrease: Access-a-Ride, which is going through some changes. New York City Transit President Richard Davey admits they’re not perfect.

“This is all about a journey. I mean, I don’t expect every New Yorker to totally be satisfied with our service. We can always do better. We know that,” Davey said. “But their voices will focus us on where we should spend our time and our resources.”

Davey says customer perception has been improving. From the spring of 2022 to the spring of 2023, people thought service was the faster, cleaner and even safer.

The survey runs through Nov. 20. If you want to make your voice heard, you can head to the MTA's website.
