Overall crime in the transit system is up 29% last year compared with 2021, but officials called the numbers “encouraging.”

NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper joined NY1’s Dean Meminger Sunday to talk about transit crime and safety strategies.

He said the city ended 2022 with “very encouraging crime stats.”

“Matter of fact, I want to say this, 2022, without factoring the pandemic years, you’d have to go back over 25 years — it’s the third lowest crime number in over 25 years,” he said.
