Herb, the owner of an apartment building on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn, said that he had "never have seen damage like this ever."

"Hopefully I’ll never see this again," he said.

A fire that started at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday caused the damage.

The FDNY is investigating it as arson and the NYPD is looking into it as a bias attack after finding two swastikas painted in the building's hallway.

What You Need To Know

  • The FDNY is investigating an arson in Fort Greene, Brooklyn that police believe is a bias attack

  • Two swastikas were spray painted on the wall of the building's hallway

  • The fire started shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday

"Outrageous - something from Nazi Germany in Brooklyn, Fort Greene, a multicultural area in Brooklyn," said Herb, who asked that NY1 not use his full name because he owns other properties. "It shouldn’t happen anywhere."

He said the fire caused extensive smoke and fire damage that destroyed a salon on the ground floor.

It took fire fighters about a half hour to control the blaze. The FDNY said a fire fighter had to be taken to Brooklyn hospital.

Herb's tenants had to climb down the fire escape to safety.

"Our neighbor was coming down the fire escape and banged on the window because they had heard the alarms first, so they woke us up," Jake Fernberg, a tenant, said.

Fernberg's partner, Claire Chatinover, said the swastikas drawn in the hallway were "just terrifying.

"When I went in to grab something I felt nauseous," Fernberg said. "I knew what to expect but seeing it was nauseating."

"Those symbols are outrageous," Herb said. "Hopefully they catch the person or individuals that were behind this atrocity."
