Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old with murder Monday in connection with the shooting death of an 11-year-old girl in the Bronx last week, the NYPD said.

Omar Bojang is also facing manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon charges, police said.

Bojang is believed by police to be the second person on a scooter that chased a 13-year-old down the street in the Longwood section of the Bronx on May 16. A 15-year-old also riding the scooter opened fire at the 13-year-old and missed, instead hitting and killing Kyhara Tay, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a news briefing Friday.

NY1 is not naming the 15-year-old because he is a minor, in accordance with our editorial standards. He was arrested at a Parkchester hotel at 1:30 a.m. Friday and arraigned in the youth part of criminal court, according to authorities.

Police allege that Bojang is a member of a gang subset and said he had a previous gun arrest in June 2020. The NYPD already had a warrant for his arrest prior to the shooting, alleging his connection to two Bronx robberies.

Mayor Eric Adams attended Tay's wake Monday evening.
