NEW YORK - The New York City Police Department is investigating more than a dozen shootings that took place Monday as a violent spike in crime continues across the city.

According to the NYPD, there were 14 shootings with 18 victims on July 13. Among them, a 17-year-old who was killed overnight in East Harlem.

In Canarsie, five people were shot in three separate shootings within about 20 minutes.

No arrests have been made.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea says it’s up to the NYPD to fix this.

“The answer is not going to be policing our way out of this and asking a small number of officers to stop more and more people and nothing happens to them. There has to be a sharper way that involves everyone —the community, involves the leaders, involves making tough decisions and enforcing gun laws,” he said.

Shea also told NY1 that people with firearms aren’t being held properly accountable.

“The guns have always been out there. It’s how you police the city and how you do that very difficult balance of respecting people’s rights, being precise, and also catching people that are carrying the guns and holding them accountable. And the accountability piece is just not there in my opinion,” said Shea.

The NYPD says there were 49 shootings in the week that ended Sunday night, an increase of 276 percent over the same week last year.
