NEW YORK — Now a Republican candidate for New York governor, Andrew Giuliani on Wednesday evening touted many of the party’s platforms in the state, including calling for tax cuts and the deregulation of businesses, promoting school choice and charter schools, and reducing crime.

The son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, Andrew, who is 35, worked in the Trump administration in the Office of Public Liaison and has never been elected to public office.

But he told NY1 he believes his focus on businesses, school choice and public safety will play with New York voters.

“I think lot of businesses and a lot of people are very unhappy to see New York will now be the highest-taxed state in the country again,” Giuliani said in an interview with political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall.” “It’s one of the reasons why so many New Yorkers are leaving.”

Among his promises, Giuliani said if elected he would cut red tape for businesses and enact “record-setting” crime reduction. He also criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo for not lifting the city and state cap on charter schools.

If Giuliani does win the governorship next year, he likely will face long odds enacting these policies and his promise to overturn bail reform, due to Democrats holding supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature. All seats in the state Assembly and state Senate are up for election next year.

In the interview, Giuliani said he thinks Republicans can win back seats to end the supermajorities in 2022. But he also said he would have to work across the political aisle, as he said his father did as New York City mayor.

Giuliani told NY1 that his father, who makes several cameos in his campaign video, has backed his run and offered to help.

The younger Giuliani also told NY1 that his old boss, former President Donald Trump, has been “very encouraging” and offered advice, and was eager to see his clash with Gov. Andrew Cuomo:

“When I told him, his first comment was, ‘Giuliani-Cuomo? Oh. I could sell tickets to that. We could fill the Garden with that,’” Giuliani recalled.

The GOP field already includes two high-profile opponents: Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Trump loyalist, and former Westchester County executive Rob Astorino, the Republican nominee for governor in 2014.
