A child is dead in Brooklyn after a 3-alarm fire tore through a home in Brownsville early Friday morning, fire officials say.

Authorities say the blaze started just after 5 a.m. at 759 Howard Ave. inside a three-story home.

Over 140 firefighters and EMS workers responded to the fire, which started on the second floor and then spread to the third, according to fire officials. One firefighter suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

Authorities say the child, who a family member identified to NY1 as 9-year-old Payton Thompson, was found on the third floor in the rear of the building. Nine other family members lived in the home and were able to safely get out, but Payton's uncle Joseph Thompson told NY1 his niece got lost in the smoke.

“The smoke just wrestled her. Smoke just took her. Smoke was in the heart. We went to the hospital, worked on her and they called it," Joseph Thompson said.

The 9-year-old was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, the FDNY said.

“Payton was, oh my gosh, she was a lover of family. She loved family. She loved to have fun. She loved to dance. She loved God," Thompson said.

“Payton's mother is trying to be in good spirits, but she's not, she's not yet. No, no parent lives with the expectation of burying the child," he added.

The night before Payton Thompson died, her uncle said they talked about something they common a meal he cooked for her.

"I say, 'you now, Pay, you didn't call me to tell me thank you for the ribs and for the corn bread.' She said, 'I'm sorry uncle my iPad died.' And she said 'but thank you so much.' She gave me a big hug and big kiss," Joseph Thompson recalled. "I didn't even know that would be the last time that I will see and hug her and embrace her."

Friday was Payton Thompson's youngest sibling's first birthday, her uncle said. The family is now looking for a place to stay with their home completely damaged by the blaze.

It took about two hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze, according to the FDNY.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
