Three NYPD officers were hospitalized after a man attacked them with a machete near Times Square on New Year’s Eve, authorities said.

The officers were standing at West 52nd Street and Eighth Avenue around 10:10 p.m. when a 19-year-old man approached them and tried to hit one of them in the head with a machete, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news briefing early Sunday morning.

After the "unprovoked" attempted attack, the man struck two other officers in the head with the machete, Sewell said.

The attack left one of the officers — an 8-year NYPD veteran —with a cut to the head, Sewell said. The second officer, who had just graduated from the Police Academy on Friday, suffered a skull fracture and a “large laceration,” the commissioner said.

One of the officers at the scene fired their gun at the 19-year-old, striking him in the shoulder, Sewell said.

The officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, she said. Police said they were all released overnight.

Their alleged attacker was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being treated at Bellevue as well, Sewell said.

All of the officers had been assigned to the NYPD’s New Year’s Eve detail, but the attack happened outside the Times Square security screening zone, the commissioner said.

At the news briefing, Mayor Eric Adams said he was “really pleased by the response and how our officers handled this situation.”

“All three of the officers are in stable conditions, and there are no credible threats to New Yorkers at this time,” Adams said.

Police sources have identified the suspect as Trevor Bickford from Maine. He is being hospitalized at Bellevue with a gunshot wound. He was arrested but no formal charges have been announced.
