Overthinking plagues so many of us. That's why NY1 spoke with psychotherapist Jenny Maenpaa to provide insight and tips on how to settle your mind.

Overthinking can get concerning when it turns into self doubt. Self doubt occurs when you start using logic to start questioning yourself. You can lose sight of your gut-instinct and that's a concern.

What You Need To Know

  • Psychotherapist Jenny Maenpaa joined NY1 to provide tips on how to settle your mind

  • First, try to reframe the situation in a positive manner

  • Write down your thoughts, then distract yourself for 24 hours
  • Be specific about what you're grateful for, and focus on what you can control

While everyone is at risk of overthinking, especially after the pandemic, high-achievers are at particular rise.

Maenpaa advises that reframing the concern in a positive way is a good step. And instead of saying "but," which can shut you down, try to think "yes, and" to help come up with a plan.

She also says that writing down your thoughts then distracting yourself for 24 hours can be beneficial. Once something is written down, your brain actually lets go of the thought from your short-term memory. While it may seem hard to do, it can help you move forward.

Maenpaa adds that practicing "specific gratitude" helps as well. Being general about your gratitude can feel rote. If you're specific, it will have greater impact.

Finally, focus on what you can control. That may help your mind from spinning.
