The 50th New York City Marathon is set to take place Sunday across the five boroughs, after being canceled last year due to the pandemic.

Thousands of participants from around the world will hit the streets for the 26.2 mile route.

In 2019, over 53,000 runners finished the run. This year, the race is being trimmed down to 33,000 runners because of COVID restrictions.

Kerin Hempel, the CEO of New York Road Runners, told NY1 the race is a celebration of New York.

"Just showing the resilience of New York City and all of the great participants in our event. But more so than the runners that will have tens of thousands, it really is about New York and celebrating the spectators and everyone coming together and all of our agencies. So we're just so thrilled to have this very big day for the City of New York," Hempel said on "Mornings On 1."

The race will have a number of COVID restrictions in place, including testing requirements and vaccination checks. All runners will be required to show proof of at least one round of the COVID-19 vaccine or a negative coronavirus test within 48 hours of the race. Officials say masks will be required in crowded areas, including at the finish line.
