“Thank you for being a shining inspiration to our young people," Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said. "Thank you for all that you’ve done for our city, for our country, but most importantly Queens."

Richards on Friday presented keys to Queens to Olympians Dalilah Muhammad and Tina Charles. Both brought home gold medals for Team USA at the Summer Games in Tokyo this year.

“For me personally, my roots, you know, my roots is everything, being born and raised in Queens, New York,” said Charles.

Charles won her gold as a member of the women’s basketball team. Muhammad ran away with gold as part of the 4X400 meter relay team.

“I remember growing up a little girl in Queens with a dream," said Muhammad. "Just worked really hard to get there and didn’t stop. And definitely had all your support along the way. I’m thankful and appreciative of that."

“What means more to me is you all and the youth can see us two up here and I hope you aspire to be up there too," said Charles. "Just do what the borough president said through hard work and dedication, not just on your sports but education-wise."

Charles is a native of East Elmhurst and a graduate of Christ the King High School in Middle Village. She has won three career gold medals and many accolades as a player in the WNBA.

Besides her family, she credits her high school basketball coach with part of her success.

“You know what? I’m one of many," said Christ the King basketball coach Bob Mackey. "There are a whole lot of people who are a part of it. We’re just so proud of her because, yeah, she’s from Queens. She’s a Christ the King grad. It’s an amazing thing."

Muhammad is native of Rochdale Village and a graduate of Benjamin Cardozo High School in Bayside. She now has two career Olympic gold medals and countless young girls looking up to her.

“It just inspires girls like me to run and don’t give up on ourselves,” said Layla Lindquist, a Metro Eagles Track and Field Club member.

Two athletes in different sports with the same roots, now inspiring young girls all over the world but especially in Queens.

“You can accomplish anything. She got three gold medals. I’m just a girl from Queens so like I can do the same thing,” said Christ the King Basketball player Saniyah Glenn.
