With just a cart full of spray paint bottles and less than two days, Buffalo native Ladie Ovila was able to forever memorialize her childhood friend Demetrious "DJ Shay" Robinson.

DJ Shay died of complications with COVID-19. His photo is now etched on the side of Doris Records on Ferry Street.

Ovila is best known for her paintings of another hip hop legend, the Notorious B.I.G. around New York City.

Now she's being commissioned to paint murals of DJ Shay throughout the Queen city.

"I paint a lot of Hip Hop artists so this was perfect to be able to do this," said Ovila. "It feels good cause I’m doing what I love to do.”

Ovila and DJ Shay bonded over their love of music.

"I used to try to DJ, do Hip Hop, rhyme and dance and stuff like that," she adds. "I know he's very significant to putting Buffalo on the map."

DJ Shay is credited with producing many local artist like Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine and Westside Gunn.

All have been signed to major record labels owned by Eminem and Jay-Z.

"He definitely had a colorful spirit about him," said Ovila.

That spirit is what Ovila wanted to capture in this painting.

"It’s an honor for me to honor him this way," she adds.
